Summer is heating up, and so are the biggest news stories in Hollywood.
This month, we recap a slew of engagements, a pop star’s apparent overdose, and much more. Here are the biggest stories from Hollywood in July 2018.
They Put A Ring On It
This month, a handful of couples both new and old announced their engagements to the world. Let’s start with singer Nick Jonas and actress Priyanka Chopra. The pair was rumored to only have been dating for around two months when Jonas popped the question. This marks the latest whirlwind engagement for young Hollywood, following Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson, and Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin. Bieber and Baldwin have been on and off for a few years, with Bieber only ending a rekindled relationship with singer Selena Gomez earlier this year. The duo got engaged earlier this month, and Baldwin has already been spotted wearing a ring that looks an awful lot like a wedding band. Finally, supermodel Karlie Kloss revealed she is now engaged to investor and multi-millionaire Joshua Kushner (brother to Jared Kushner who is married to Ivanka Trump) whom she has been dating for a few years. Congratulations to all of the happy couples!
This month at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles, more than 140 victims of former USA Gymnastics doctor, Larry Nassar, were honored with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Sarah Klein, one of Nassar’s earlier victims, Tiffany Thomas Lopez, a former Michigan State University softball player, and USA Olympic Gold-Medalist Aly Raisman lead the pack, delivering emotional and powerful speeches on the importance of speaking out against abusers. The group of women received a standing ovation during their speeches. These women are part of more than the 150 that have been abused at the hands of Nassar over the years of his career. Nassar was sentenced to 175 years behind bars by Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, during the trial where these women all delivered testimonies on their experiences with Nassar. We can’t think of better recipients for the Arthur Ashe Courage Award than these strong and courageous women.
2018 Emmy Nominees
This month, the 2018 Emmy nominees were announced, with some not-so-surprising results. Series such as This Is Us, Westworld, Game of Thrones, and The Handmaid’s Tale were among the nominees for Drama Series. The Comedy Series nominees included Atlanta, Black-ish, GLOW, and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Actor Darren Criss received his first Emmy nod for his portrayal of Andrew Cunanan in FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Other notable nominees include Atlanta‘s Donald Glover, Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown, and Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon. Congrats to all of the nominees!
In the sadder news from this month, singer and actress Demi Lovato was found unconscious from an apparent overdose in her Los Angeles home earlier this month. This comes after reportedly months of partying with friends. The singer was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she is still being monitored due to continued “complications” from her apparent overdose. Lovato is awake, as reported in a statement by her camp saying, “Demi is awake and with her family who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers, and support.” While various reports have come out in speculation of what exactly Lovato allegedly overdosed on, she was given the drug Narcan (designed to reverse an opiod overdose) to revive her once paramedics arrived. The singer’s family, and former boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama have been by her side consistently since she was admitted, and have been supporting her through her recovery. We wish Lovato all the best.
